Buddha Purnima 2023
The Buddhist festival of Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, honors the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, and marks his birth, enlightenment and death (parinirvana). This festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the lunar month of Vaisakh.
Buddhists around the world observe a variety of ceremonies and traditions to mark Buddha Purnima. Some of these might be attending prayer meetings, meditating, lighting candles, offering flowers and incense sticks, and listening to discourses on the Buddha’s teachings. Processions and cultural programs are also organized by some Buddhist groups.
History Of Gautam Buddha
Vesak, or Buddha Jayanti, another name for Buddha Purnima, has a 2,500-year-long and interesting history. The holiday honours the life and teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha.
Siddhartha Gautama is said to have been born in Lumbini, present-day Nepal, on Vaishaka Purnima in 563 BCE. He lived a normal life while coming from a noble family. But he abandoned his privileged life and turned into a nomadic ascetic in search of wisdom.
Siddhartha obtained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, on the full moon day of Vaishakh, after six years of meditation and spiritual practise. He adopted the name Buddha, which is Sanskrit for “the awakened one.”
The Eightfold Path, which emphasises the value of cultivating knowledge and compassion via meditation practise, the Four Noble Truths, and leading a moral and ethical life, is the doctrine that the Buddha travelled and taught for the following 45 years.
On the Vaishakh full moon day, Buddha passed away in Kushinagar, India, at the age of 80. When he passed away, he experienced parinirvana, a state of ultimate liberation that signifies the end of the cycle of birth and death.
As an homage to the Buddha and his teachings, India hosted the first recognised Buddha Purnima festival in 1956. The festival is now observed by Buddhists all around the world and serves as a reminder of the value of spiritual practise, peace, and compassion in our daily lives.
