International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day

Happy Nurses Day

On an annual basis on 12 May, International Nurses Day is celebrated to recognize and honor the essential contribution that nurses make to society. The day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about better working conditions and resources for nurses as well as the important role nurses play in health care.
May 12 was chosen as the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth because she is considered the father of modern nursing. British nurse Florence Nightingale is credited with developing modern nursing and significantly advancing medical procedures during the Crimean War in the 1850s. International Nurses Day was first established in 1974 by the International Nurses Council.

Each year, the ICN chooses a theme for International Nurses Day with the intention of bringing attention to a specific problem or difficulty that nurses and health care systems are currently facing around the world.
The theme for International Nurses Day in 2021 is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare”. Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to give nurses the necessary power and tools to actively participate in setting the direction of healthcare was emphasized.
Organizations and communities around the world organize events and activities to honor nurses and their contributions to healthcare on International Nurses Day. This may include community engagement initiatives, award ceremonies, and instructional lectures.

The occasion of International Nurses Day is an important occasion to highlight and honor the invaluable contribution made by nurses to the society. It serves as a reminder of the need to stand up for and support nurses, especially in light of the many hardships and obstacles they still face on the job. May we unite on this day and throughout the year to strive for a better future for nursing and healthcare globally.
